St. Joseph Missouri’s North Side Head Start rounds out its first year of operation after three years of construction. The Head Start serves as an advantage to the community, serving children from birth to 5 years old who, for many, are experiencing their first months away from their parents.

With 10 teachers servicing 68 children total, the Head Start is able provide a safe, fun, and educational environment, at no cost to the family. Children are able to socialize with each other on and off the playground, and practice their gross motor skills in an indoor facility. This helps develop social and emotional skills that are essential for children to experience.

Site Coordinator Tracy Curtis-Hurt explains how the teachers are design their classrooms for their students to feel more comfortable away from home. Additionally, teachers incorporate natural science into the daily activities by having each of their students grow their own vegetables.
